When the question
of Belonging becomes more complex,
it takes more than one point of reference, to
find your
bearings.
German and English are my third and fourth languages, and at the same time the languages in which I feel at home today.
For more than 20 years, an international life spanning multiple languages, countries, and time zones has also been part of my relationship and my work.
Belonging
doesn’t have
to mean the same thing to both of you
for you to find your bearings in it together
What feels self-evident to us often depends on where we’re looking from.
A language can feel like closeness in one moment and like distance in the next.
A place can mean freedom and, at the same time, make us deeply aware of what we miss.
Perhaps you moved to another country as expats for one of your careers. What was a career decision for one of you can also mean distance from family, from where you come from, or from a part of your own life for the other.
We, too, are not the same in every context. Different languages, places, and ways of taking things for granted bring different experiences and needs to the foreground. Perhaps you live in a place that means home to both of you. And only one of you has truly arrived there.
Your children may move naturally through a language you didn’t grow up with yourselves. Family and friends may be spread across several countries.
And a place that is simply everyday life for one of you can hold an entirely different meaning for the other.
In this way, several points of reference can be at play within the same life, taking on different meanings depending on the context. Then questions of where to live, language, children, family, or career can be about far more than the decision itself.

I work bilingually in German and English, online and in my space in Stade. Weekends, too.
ZUKUNFTSMOMENT is less than an hour’s drive from Hamburg’s Elbe suburbs (Blankenese, Othmarschen, Nienstedten, Rissen) and western Hamburg (Altona, Bahrenfeld, Eidelstedt).
From southern Hamburg, the Harburg district, Lüneburg, and Bremen, the drive takes about 75 to 90 minutes.
