SYSTEMIC & TRAUMA-INFORMED FAMILY THERAPY

02 · ADULT FAMILIES

When being together still often feels “like it used to,” even though you’re all adults.

Family is where we first learn how belonging works. And what place we hold within it.

We grow up, change, and find our own paths. Yet when we come together, roles, expectations, and loyalties that mattered at an earlier time in our lives can continue to shape how we relate to one another today.

01 · WHAT FOR

You share a

history.

How you meet

each other

within it today

is yours to shape.

Systemic family therapy has an image problem.
It’s often associated with families where one person has become “the problem,” or where conflicts have become difficult to navigate.

For me, it can be a space where different perspectives, needs, and boundaries can exist side by side.

There doesn’t need to be one shared truth. Perhaps, at first, just more room to meet each other without losing sight of yourselves in the process.

02 · FAMILY IN THEN MODE

Sometimes all it takes is a sentence, a look, or a silence, and you’re instantly back in familiar reactions. You explain yourselves, become irritated, are especially nice, or withdraw.

Maybe there are topics you’ve learned to avoid. Setting a boundary can quickly feel like ingratitude. Expectations linger in the room without ever having been spoken aloud.

Siblings find themselves slipping back into old positions. Between parents and their adult children, closeness and independence don’t always fit together easily. Sometimes distance has long since become easier than being together.

You may already be aware of much of this. You know your roles and can reliably predict what will happen. That knowledge alone doesn’t change how you experience each other.

You’re no longer the same people you once were. Yet together, it can sometimes still feel that way.

03 · WHAT HOLDS YOU BACK

Thinking about your own family differently than you’re used to can feel as though you’re questioning more than just what has become difficult.

· My parents did the best they could · Those are stories from the past · Maybe I’m just too sensitive · Am I even allowed to see it this way · Other families have much bigger problems · What good would that do · It’s not going to change anyway · My siblings see it completely differently · I don’t want to blame anyone · Do I really have to tell a stranger about this · What if my family finds out · Maybe I’m just expecting too much · I don’t want to speak badly about my family · And what am I supposed to do there on my own if the others won’t come ·

ZUKUNFTSMOMENT is less than an hour’s drive from Hamburg’s Elbe suburbs (Blankenese, Othmarschen, Nienstedten, Rissen) and western Hamburg (Altona, Bahrenfeld, Eidelstedt).

From southern Hamburg, the Harburg district, Lüneburg, and Bremen, the drive takes about 75 to 90 minutes.
